a little defense

“What’s your major?”

“I’m a Humanities major, with a minor in Art History.”  Strike one!

“What are you going to do with that?”

“Oh, I don’t know.  I just want to be a mom.” Strike two!

Am I a useless person because I don’t know how to program computers?

For all the engineers making our world more connected, we need some Humanities majors to understand the cultures on the other side of the world that are becoming more a part of our life in the west.   I plan on teaching my family what I know about history and cultures of the world, which I’ve learned in my major and minor classes at BYU.

:D

I hate it when people question Avram’s major (Ancient Near Eastern Studies), or when they seem to think that it’s okay that I majored in Near Eastern Studies because I’m a girl, and so don’t have to support my family. I know that there aren’t highly “employable” fields for the humanities, but that doesn’t devalue them as a discipline, nor does it mean that there aren’t any jobs at all; they’re just less prevalent than the sciences, and business types.

And, all I ever wanted is to be a mom with my major, and I don’t think there’s any shame in that at all. Who would want ignorant mothers? (Not that I’m saying you have to have a college degree to be a good mother, of course.)
